Plumbing issues can present themselves in many different forms and unfortunately often strike when we least expect them! Below are some of the most common household plumbing issues we see as an experienced Perth Plumber well as their common causes so that you can keep an eye out for them the next time they occur.
1. Leaking Tap / Toilet
Not only is a leaking tap or toilet in your kitchen or bathroom irritating, but it can also waste a significant amount of water – one of our most precious resources. According to the Queensland Government, one slowly dripping tap can waste around 9,000 litres of water a year and a visibly leaking toilet can waste over 60,000 litres [1].
Common causes of a leaking tap include having a loose, worn-out or otherwise faulty O-ring, a worn-out or damaged cartridge, a corroded valve seat or a broken washer. Toilet leaks can be caused by deteriorated or damaged flush valves and cracks in the tank or bowl.
2. Blocked Drain
Blocked drains are another common household plumbing problem, but are one that should not be ignored as they can quickly become a bigger issue if they are not immediately addressed by a qualified Perth plumber. A blocked drain could lead to major flooding that could seriously damage your floors and walls, as well as create mould which can have serious health impacts.
Blocked drains are often caused by tree roots and other unintended objects going down the drain and getting stuck (e.g. hair build-up, grease, food waste, soap, toys, sanitary products, leaves etc.).
While chemical drain cleaners can sometimes remove hair and grease, be aware that there is a risk of damaging and corroding your pipes if you use them. That’s why you should instead call a qualified Perth plumber who will have the knowledge, experience, equipment and tools needed to address the blocked drain safely and efficiently.
3. Hot Water Problems
There’s nothing worse than hopping into the shower on a cold Autumn morning only to discover that you have no hot water! If you have no hot water the chances are the problem is related to your hot water system.
Perhaps you have a leaking hot water system, a hot water system with a faulty tempering valve (an issue that can occur with storage hot water systems) or maybe you have a failed heating element (an issue that can occur with electric hot water systems).
You could also just have a system that needs to be serviced or fully replaced (we usually recommend servicing hot water systems every two years and replacing systems every seven years).
4. Clogged Toilet
Clogged toilets are another common occurrence in Western Australian households, and they are frequently caused by flushing products that are not intended to be flushed e.g. sanitary products, baby wipes and disposable face masks. They can also be caused by the build-up of toilet paper.
5. Burst Pipes
A burst pipe is another plumbing issue that we commonly get called out to address and for good reason – they have the potential to cause serious structural damage to your home if not addressed! Burst pipes can be caused by freezing temperatures, corrosion, earthquakes as well as due to age.
